If you are looking for skincare products you can use to pamper your skin, but that do not contain any harmful ingredients, you may want to consider switching to organic skincare products. Natural skincare products have actually been around for hundreds of years, yet people are only recently starting to rediscover the benefits of using all-natural products on their skin. Here are a few reasons why you should think about switching, too:

Organic skincare gives you a healthy glow

You’ve probably heard the saying “you are what you eat.” Well, try and think of skincare products as “food” for your skin. The same way eating a lot of unhealthy junk food can diminish your appearance; using products that contain a lot of “junk” ingredients can also make you look older and more tired. On the other hand, using all-natural and organic skincare will feed your skin with lots of vitamins and minerals, so that your skin cells will be stimulated to renew themselves on their own. This will give your skin that healthy, youthful glow coveted by so many women worldwide.

Organic skincare helps reduce the risk of getting rashes

Organic products are great for those who have sensitive skin, or who are prone to allergic reactions and skin irritations. A lot of chemically manufactured products contain color dyes, strong perfumes, and carcinogenic ingredients that can harm your skin and cause reactions. Because organic skincare products are made from natural ingredients, this reduces the risk of causing adverse reactions on your skin. However, some people are allergic to natural ingredients such as bee pollen, nuts or eggs, so if you are highly sensitive or have known allergies to natural substances, you must pay attention to ingredients some organic products contain. It is also worth it to do a patch test on your skin first before using any product extensively.

Organic skincare products give you value for your money

A lot of people suffer from the misconception that good organic products cost a lot of money, and that only the more privileged can afford them. Not so, as lately there has been a resurgence of organic skincare lines that have come up with good and effective yet reasonably-priced products for the average consumer. And even if some of the bigger and better-known organic brands do carry products with heftier price tags than those synthetically produced ones, it is still worth making the investment if what you get in return is healthy, nourished, and glowing skin free from harmful or damaging chemicals.

Source: http://www.femalenetwork.com/fashion-beauty/why-switch-to-organic-skincare-products/

Cancer Prevention Tips

According to a new report from the President's Cancer Panel, environmental toxins play a significant and under-recognized role in cancer, causing "grievous harm" to untold numbers of people. Our groundbreaking research into umbilical cord blood has found that children are being born pre-polluted with nearly 300 industrial chemicals, pesticides and contaminants, many of which have been found to cause cancer in lab studies or in people.
Four of every 10 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, and two of every 10 will die from it. Beyond talking to your doctor about lifestyle changes that are known to make a difference -- stopping smoking, reducing drinking, losing weight, exercising and eating right -- there are things you can do to reduce your risk.
Here are some simple ways you can reduce your exposure to potentially cancer-causing chemicals (click here to download the PDF):

1. Filter your tap water. Common carcinogens in tap water include arsenic, chromium, and chemical byproducts that form when water is disinfected. A simple carbon tap-mounted filter or pitcher can help reduce the levels of some of these contaminants. If your water is polluted with arsenic or chromium, a reverse osmosis filter will help. Learn about your tap water and home water filters at EWG's National Tap Water Database.
2. Seal outdoor wooden decks and play sets. Those built before 2005 are likely coated with an arsenic pesticide that can stick to hands and clothing. Learn more from EWG.
3. Cut down on stain- and grease-proofing chemicals. "Fluorochemicals" related to Teflon and Scotchgard are used in stain repellants on carpets and couches and in greaseproof coatings for packaged and fast foods. To avoid them, avoid greasy packaged foods and say no to optional stain treatments in the home. Download EWG's Guide to PFCs.
4. Stay safe in the sun. More than one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. To protect your skin from the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) radiation, seek shade, wear protective clothing and use a safe and effective sunscreen from EWG's sunscreen database.
5. Cut down on fatty meat and high-fat dairy products. Long-lasting cancer-causing pollutants like dioxins and PCBs accumulate in the food chain and concentrate in animal fat.
6. Eat EWG's Clean 15. Many pesticides have been linked to cancer. Eating from EWG's Clean 15 list of the least contaminated fruits and vegetables will help cut your pesticide exposures. (And for EWG's Dirty Dozen, buy organic.) Learn more at EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides.
7. Cut your exposures to BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic estrogen found in some hard plastic water bottles, canned infant formula, and canned foods. Some of these chemicals cause cancer in lab studies. To avoid them, eat fewer canned foods, breast feed your baby or use powdered formula, and choose water bottles free of BPA. Get EWG's tips to avoid it.

8. Avoid carcinogens in cosmetics. Use EWG's Skin Deep cosmetic database to find products free of chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer. When you're shopping, don't buy products that list ingredients with "PEG" or "-eth" in their name (chemicals often tainted with contaminants linked to cancer).
9. Read the warnings. Some products list warnings of cancer risks -- read the label before you buy. Californians will see a "Proposition 65" warning label on products that contain chemicals the state has identified as cancer-causing.

Myths about Sunscreen

Sunscreens prevent sunburns, but beyond that simple fact surprisingly little is known about the safety and efficacy of these ubiquitous creams and sprays. FDA’s failure to finalize its 1978 sunscreen safety standards both epitomizes and perpetuates this state of confusion. EWG’s review of the latest research unearthed troubling facts that might tempt you to give up on sunscreens altogether. That’s not the right answer – despite the unknowns about their efficacy, public health agencies still recommend using sunscreens, just not as your first line of defense against the sun. At EWG we use sunscreens, but we look for shade, wear protective clothing and avoid the noontime sun before we smear on the cream. Here are the surprising facts:

1. There’s no consensus on whether sunscreens prevent skin cancer.
The Food and Drug Administration’s 2007 draft sunscreen safety regulations say: “FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer” (FDA 2007). The International Agency for Research on Cancer agrees. IARC recommends clothing, hats and shade as primary barriers to UV radiation and writes that “sunscreens should not be the first choice for skin cancer prevention and should not be used as the sole agent for protection against the sun” (IARC 2001a). Read more.

2. There’s some evidence that sunscreens might increase the risk of the deadliest form of skin cancer for some people.
Some researchers have detected an increased risk of melanoma among sunscreen users. No one knows the cause, but scientists speculate that sunscreen users stay out in the sun longer and absorb more radiation overall, or that free radicals released as sunscreen chemicals break down in sunlight may play a role. One other hunch: Inferior sunscreens with poor UVA protection that have dominated the market for 30 years may have led to this surprising outcome. All major public health agencies still advise using sunscreens, but they also stress the importance of shade, clothing and timing. Read more.

3. There are more high SPF products than ever before, but no proof that they’re better.
In 2007 the FDA published draft regulations that would prohibit companies from labeling sunscreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) higher than “SPF 50+.” The agency wrote that higher values were “inherently misleading,” given that “there is no assurance that the specific values themselves are in fact truthful…” (FDA 2007). Scientists are also worried that high-SPF products may tempt people to stay in the sun too long, suppressing sunburns (a late, key warning of overexposure) while upping the risks of other kinds of skin damage.

Flaunting FDA’s proposed regulation, companies substantially increased their high-SPF offerings in 2010. Nearly one in six products now lists SPF values higher than 50, compared to only one in eight the year before, according to EWG’s analysis of nearly 500 beach and sport sunscreens. Neutrogena, with six products labeled "SPF 100," and Banana Boat, with four, stand out among the offenders. Read more.

4. Too little sun might be harmful, reducing the body’s vitamin D levels.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that sunshine serves a critical function in the body that sunscreen appears to inhibit — production of vitamin D. The main source of vitamin D in the body is sunshine, and the compound is enormously important to health – it strengthens bones and the immune system, reduces the risk of various cancers (including breast, colon, kidney, and ovarian cancers) and regulates at least 1,000 different genes governing virtually every tissue in the body. (Mead 2008) Over the last two decades, vitamin D levels in the U.S. population have been decreasing steadily, creating a “growing epidemic of vitamin D insufficiency” (Ginde 2009a). Seven of every 10 U.S. children now have low levels. Those most likely to be deficient include children who are obese or who spend more than four hours daily in front of the TV, computer or video games (Kumar 2009).

Experts disagree on the solution. The American Medical Association has recommended 10 minutes of direct sun (without sunscreen) several times a week (AMA 2008), while the American Academy of Dermatology holds that “there is no scientifically validated, safe threshold level of UV exposure from the sun that allows for maximal vitamin D synthesis without increasing skin cancer risk” (AAD 2009). Vitamin D supplements are the alternative, but there is debate over the proper amount. The Institute of Medicine has launched new research to reassess the current guidelines. In the meantime, your doctor can test your vitamin D levels and give advice on sunshine versus supplements. Read more.

5. The common sunscreen ingredient vitamin A may speed the development of cancer.
Recently available data from an FDA study indicate that a form of vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions (NTP 2009). This evidence is troubling because the sunscreen industry adds vitamin A to 41 percent of all sunscreens.

The industry puts vitamin A in its formulations because it is an anti-oxidant that slows skin aging. That may be true for lotions and night creams used indoors, but FDA recently conducted a study of vitamin A’s photocarcinogenic properties, the possibility that it results in cancerous tumors when used on skin exposed to sunlight. Scientists have known for some time that vitamin A can spur excess skin growth (hyperplasia), and that in sunlight it can form free radicals that damage DNA (NTP 2000).

In FDA’s one-year study, tumors and lesions developed up to 21 percent sooner in lab animals coated in a vitamin A-laced cream (at a concentration of 0.5%) than animals treated with a vitamin-free cream. Both groups were exposed to the equivalent of just nine minutes of maximum intensity sunlight each day.

It’s an ironic twist for an industry already battling studies on whether their products protect against skin cancer. The FDA data are preliminary, but if they hold up in the final assessment, the sunscreen industry has a big problem. In the meantime, EWG recommends that consumers avoid sunscreens with vitamin A (look for “retinyl palmitate” or “retinol” on the label). Read more.

6. Free radicals and other skin-damaging byproducts of sunscreen.
Both UV radiation and many common sunscreen ingredients generate free radicals that damage DNA and skin cells, accelerate skin aging and cause skin cancer. An effective sunscreen prevents more damage than it causes, but sunscreens are far better at preventing sunburn than at limiting free radical damage. While typical SPF ratings for sunburn protection range from 15 to 50, equivalent “free radical protection factors” fall at only about 2. When consumers apply too little sunscreen or reapply it infrequently, behaviors that are more common than not, sunscreens can cause more free radical damage than UV rays on bare skin. Read more.

7. Pick your sunscreen: nanomaterials or potential hormone disruptors.
The ideal sunscreen would completely block the UV rays that cause sunburn, immune suppression and damaging free radicals. It would remain effective on the skin for several hours and not form harmful ingredients when degraded by UV light. It would smell and feel pleasant so that people use it in the right amount and frequency.

Unsurprisingly, there is currently no sunscreen that meets all of these criteria. The major choice in the U.S. is between “chemical” sunscreens, which have inferior stability, penetrate the skin and may disrupt the body’s hormone systems, and “mineral” sunscreens (zinc and titanium), which often contain micronized- or nano-scale particles of those minerals.

After reviewing the evidence, EWG determined that mineral sunscreens have the best safety profile of today’s choices. They are stable in sunlight and do not appear to penetrate the skin. They offer UVA protection, which is sorely lacking in most of today’s sunscreen products. Mexoryl SX (ecamsule) is another good option, but it’s sold in very few formulations. Tinosorb S and M could be great solutions but are not yet available in the U.S. For consumers who don’t like mineral products, we recommend sunscreens with avobenzone (3 percent for the best UVA protection) and without the notorious hormone disruptors oxybenzone or 4-MBC. Scientists have called for parents to avoid using oxybenzone on children due to penetration and toxicity concerns. Read more.

8. Europe’s better sunscreens.
Sunscreen makers and users in Europe have more options than in the United States. In Europe, sunscreen makers can select from among 27 chemicals for their formulations, compared to 17 in the U.S. Companies selling in Europe can add any of seven UVA filters to their products, but have a choice of only three when they market in the U.S. European sunscreens could earn FDA’s proposed four-star top rating for UVA protection, while the best U.S. products would earn only three stars. Sunscreen chemicals approved in Europe but not by the FDA provide up to five times more UVA protection; U.S. companies have been waiting five years for FDA approval to use the same compounds. Last but not least, Europeans will find many sunscreens with strong (mandatory) UVA protection if proposed regulations in Europe are finalized. Under FDA’s current proposal, Americans will not. Read more.

9. The 33rd summer in a row without final U.S. sunscreen safety regulations.
In the United States, consumer protection has stalled because of the FDA’s 32-year effort to set enforceable guidelines for consumer protection. EWG has found a number of serious problems with existing products, including overstated claims about their perfomance and inadequate UVA protection. Many of these will be remedied when the FDA’s proposed sunscreen rule takes effect. But even after the rule is enacted, gaps will remain. FDA does not consider serious toxicity concerns such as hormone disruption when approving new sun filters, and the new rules would fail to measure sunscreen stability despite ample evidence that many products break down quickly in sunlight. Environmental Working Group (EWG) detected 16 chemicals from 4 chemical families - phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and musks - in blood and urine samples from 20 teen girls aged 14-19. Studies link these chemicals to potential health effects including cancer and hormone disruption. These tests feature first-ever exposure data for parabens in teens, and indicate that young women are widely exposed to this common class of cosmetic preservatives, with 2 parabens, methylparaben and propylparaben, detected in every single girl tested.
This work represents the first focused look at teen exposures to chemicals of concern in cosmetics, exposures that occur during a period of accelerated development. Adolescence encompasses maturation of the reproductive, immune, blood, and adrenal hormone systems, rapid bone growth associated with the adolescent "growth spurt," shifts in metabolism, and key changes to brain structure and function. Alterations in an array of sex hormones, present in the body at levels as low as one part per billion (ppb), or even one part per trillion (ppt), guide this transformation to adulthood. Emerging research suggests that teens may be particularly sensitive to exposures to trace levels of hormone-disrupting chemicals like the ones targeted in this study, given the cascade of closely interrelated hormonal signals orchestrating the transformation from childhood to adulthood.

By Rebecca Sutton, Ph.D

Natural VS Organic

The term "Natural" and "Organic" are not the same. The market is full of body care products labeled "natural." Remember that natural is an illusory marketing term not regulated by the government. A lotion or shampoo labeled as natural does not necessarily mean it is mainly comprised of natural ingredients. Products labeled "natural" can often use synthetic preservatives and other un-natural chemical ingredients alongside plant ingredients. The term natural has a broad meaning. According to government labeling requirements, "natural" means that an ingredient has not been significantly altered from its original state, nor has anything been removed from it (with the exception of water), nor have other substances been added to it.Organic products are made with ingredients grown without any synthetic chemicals. Organic products typically do not contain synthetic ingredients because you cannot certify a synthetic as organic. Why do they allow for companies to put harmful chemicals in our skin care products? Well, I am not a big defender of government, but on this one I'll help them out. The governments sole purpose should be to protect its citizens. This is also a free market society. The government takes a products and requires for manufacturers to list ingredients. We have to assume some type of responsibility and take care of ourselves. The fact companies are putting harmful carcinogens in there products is not a cloak and dagger operation. The ingredients are clear as day on the label. It is our responsibility to investigate these ingredients and determine if they are harmful. The government even has a web-site where these chemicals and the precautions that should be executed when handling them. Lets face it. Labels don't always do it. Lets look at cigarettes. Can you blame government for people buying cigarette's. Its on the label. You will get cancer if you smoke! People keep buying cigarettes. I don't rely on government to completely take care of me. Imagine, that we can use the Internet for other things other than twittering. We have to read. Yes, I said it. We have to read and use the Internet for something other that the garbage we use it for. Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care Products.

Just to make you laugh this morning.

Can you imagine little Johnny Coming home from school and he tells you he needs ingredients for a science project. She did not feel like it was cleaning because she did not see that foam you see in all the commercials. Many people try an organic shampoo or a Glam-Nation Organic Foaming Cleanser and they say they love it, but believe its not cleaning because of the lack of foam. Most people associate foam with cleaning. Well, this is one of those magic tricks non-organic companies use to sell their products. All that foam may appear to be doing something, but in reality it's not doing anything. Foam is nothing but sodium laureth sulfate, also known as sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). I have already written about this chemical and its harmful properties, but I am trying to educate you on every aspect of the effects these chemicals can have. Next time you are in your shower and you are enjoying all that foam be aware of what is causing it. There are many products in the market, including Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care Products, that are chemical free. Many products have the foam you like, but without the chemicals. Read the label. Look for products that are SLES/SLS-free. Go organic. Be good to your self. http://www.glam-nation.com/

Phenoxyethanol: Preservative with Dirty Past

While paraben preservatives seem to (finally!) fall out of favour, cosmetic industry, even its organic wing, is surprisingly tolerant to phenoxyethanol preservative. It often appears in the ingredients list of otherwise perfectly natural and even organic beauty products. Sometimes the manufacturer would add a clause “derived from grapefruits”. So is phenoxyethanol that safe?
Apparently, phenoxyethanol is no lesser evil than parabens. While it’s generally non-irritating and formaldehyde-free, it doesn’t mean it’s any better than parabens. Here’s why.
Meet phenoxyethanol, or ethylene glycol monophenyl ether. Already doesn’t sound too good, does it?

It’s really troubling that phenoxyethanol, glycolic ether that was once believed to be non-toxic, is becoming a “safe” alternative to parabens.
However, several animal studies clearly demonstrate toxicity of phenoxyethanol, which causes damaging effects on the brain and the nervous system, even at moderate concentrations. As a cosmetic ingredient, phenoxyethanol is restricted in Japan and the European Union. Even the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) data sheets show “chromosomal changes and genetic mutation effects in testing as well as testicular atrophy and reproductive damage in mice.”

In cosmetic formulations, phenoxyethanol is used to kill bacteria and stabilize the formulation. It’s often combined with polyquaterniums to balance its acidity. While it’s theoretically possible to derive phenoxyethanol from natural sources, beauty industry prefers a cheap synthetic phenoxyethanol that can be bought very cheaply from China.

I also came across over the interesting bit of research:
Phenoxyethanol breaks down to phenol and acetaldehyde, acetaldehyde converts to acetate. Phenol can disable the immune system’s primary response mechanism. Given that, it is at best ironic, that phenoxyethanol is used as an anti-bacterial in vaccines. Acetaldehyde occurs during the breakdown of ethanol, (alchohol and 2-phenoxyETHANOL), it is a suspected carcinogen. Inhalation studies have shown irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.
All the warnings, however, refer to concentrated phenoxyethanol when it’s swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin of poor, helpless animals. Conventional chemists insist that phenoxyethanol is safe at lower doses, because in cosmetics the concentrations are typically 0.5% to 1%.

Now, what is 1% when it comes to a bottle of a lotion? 1% means 2 grams of pure 100% phenoxyethanol per 200 ml bottle of a lotion, a shampoo or a fragrance. It’s almost a teaspoonful! Does it make any difference if you rub it at once all over your body or you spread the damage and massage the toxin a drop at a time over a couple of months? It will end up inside your body in any case. Instead of a quick kill you simply opt for a slow kill, as Aubrey Hampton, the creator of Aubrey Organics, once said.
Unfortunately, phenoxyethanol can spoil even the purest and most organic of formulations. Spoil figuratively, of course, by making it far less organic as the manufacturer would want us to believe. So when you see phenoxyethanol listed on a bottle of so-called “organic” baby lotion, put it back on the shelf and look for a truly green, safe and healthy product.

Watch out for these nicknames of phenoxyethanol:
Dowanol
Arosol
Emery 6705
Phenoxetol
Rose ether (sounds really organic!!!)
Phenoxyethyl alcohol
Glycol monophenyl ether
Beta-hydroxyethyl phenyl ether

Organic Skin Care Products - GreenMaven.com

In today's world it is odd to find anything that is a service to the community, let alone the world. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of Glam Nation Skin Care Products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc. Coconut oil helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

Organic Skin Care Products, Benefits of Olive Oil in Glam Nation's Organic Skin Care Products

Olive oil has been used since old times. Whether this is from the makeup we use, or impurities found in the air, French Clay acts as a magnet, penetrating into deep into the skin layers.

ABSORPTION OF NATURAL MINERALS
Although when applied to the skin French Clay draws out impurities, it also allows the essential mineral within the clay to be absorbed by the skin. The natural mineral found in the clay aids healing to the cells under the skin.
The natural minerals found within French clay have the ability to stimulate the blood circulation, remove dead skin cells and tone and freshens the skin.

Glam Nations Organic Skin Care Products uses only the finest ingredients. We travel the earth looking for ingredients that will benefit our customers in every way. Glam Nations Mask is made with French Clay as a primary ingredient. Glam Nation Organic Skin Care Products, Be Good to Your Self.

Organic Skin Care Products, SOOTHFUL SERUM ANTI-AGING

<img style="BORDER-RIGHT: #000000 2px solid; butter in its creams. Unlike creams made with petroleum jelly or beeswax, Shea Butter does not clog pores thus not leaving a greasy film. Shea Butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E help maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy. They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin. They help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines. Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and rejuvenator. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair. Shea Butter is high in unsaponifiables (a type of fat). Shea Butter has between 7-12% unsaponifiables. For comparison, avocado oil, a well known skin conditioner, has between 2-6%. This high level of unsaponifiables is one of the properties that makes Shea Butter so invaluable in treating the conditions listed above. Also, Shea Butter easily penetrates the skin allowing the skin to breathe and not clogging pores. Shea Butter has a high level of cinnamic acid, a natural sun screen. So, it provides some degree of protection from the sun. Shea Butter is also anti-inflammatory making it useful in treating rheumatism. While we make no medical claims about our Shea Butter, we do have anecdotal evidence that it is very useful in treating minor skin conditions. Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care Products use Shea Butter and many other organic ingredients that make you beautiful on the inside and out.

Organic Skin Care Products, Skin Benefits of Green Tea

Why does Glam-Nation use green tee in its Serums and Hydrators. There have been a number of encouraging studies of skin benefits of green tea. Human studies have credibly demonstrated that topical green tea formulations reduce sun damage. Green tea appears to exert sun damage protection by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation rather than by blocking UV rays. Therefore, green tea may synergistically enhance sun protection when used in addition to a sunscreen.
A small study showed benefits of 2% polyphenone (via a particular type of green tea extract) in papulopustular rosacea. In particular, a significant reduction in inflammatory lesion was reported compared to placebo.
What about wrinkles, skin sag and other signs of aging? Can green tea help? Considering their well-documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, topical green tea polyphenols are likely to slow down the development of some signs of aging. Whether green tea can actually diminish wrinkles and skin sag is far more uncertain. In a 2005 study, forty women with moderate photoaging were randomized to either a combination regimen of 10% green tea cream and 300 mg twice-daily green tea oral supplementation or a placebo regimen for 8 weeks. No significant differences in clinical grading were found between the green tea-treated and placebo groups. On the other hand, histologic grading of skin biopsies did show significant improvement in the elastic tissue content of treated specimens. More human studies are needed to not only determine the scope of anti-aging skin benefits of green tea but also to work out the optimal usage. Glam Nation Organic Skin Care Products are made from only the most beneficial ingredients the earth has to offer. Add a blend of rosemary, bergamot and lemon. Dab sparingly on the neck and shoulders, and laugh coyly when he says, "What is that scent you're wearing?"
Oh hang it, who has time? What about Chanel No. 5? There's a bottle on the bedside table somewhere.
Thank goodness for the industrial revolution. Where once we made our own perfumes from natural ingredients, the chemical industry now does it for us.
Today there are over 3000 chemicals commonly used in the manufacture of fragrances. And not just in perfumes and colognes, but in soaps, cleaning products, air fresheners, laundry products, detergents, and paper tissues. And these fragrances are everywhere – not just in our homes but our offices, schools and public buildings, and on public transport.
But there's a downside – chemical fragrances might be affecting more of us than we think.
That's the conclusion of a US researcher, who recently looked at six common household cleaning and deodorising products. Her study has been published online by the journal Environmental Impact Assessment Review.
The researcher, Dr Anne Steinemann from the University of Washington, looked at three common air fresheners (a solid deodouriser disk, a liquid spray and a plug-in timed spray), and three laundry products that used chemical fragrances (a fabric softener, a detergent, and a dryer sheet, which is a scented tissue placed in a clothes dryer). These were top-selling brands made by US companies and sold internationally.
Using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, she tested the products for concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – chemicals released by the products into the surrounding air.
The six products together emitted nearly 100 different VOCs. Ten of these VOCs are regulated under US laws because they are toxic: chemicals such as ethanol, 1,4-dioxane, ethyl acetate, alpha-pinene, 2-butanone, acetaldehyde, and chloromethane. None of these chemicals were required to be listed on the product labels.
Plenty of research has shown that about 20 per cent of the population are allergic or sensitive to chemical fragrances – they may get a skin rash, hay fever, asthma, migraine, nausea, dizziness, or fatigue and difficulty concentrating. In those people who are known to have allergies the figure is higher, about 30 per cent.
But there hasn't been much research that shows these chemicals cause serious long-term illnesses – such as cancer, birth defects or deficiencies of the immune system – in humans.
The manufacturers of these products therefore argue that their products are safe. In any case, chemical fragrances are used in low concentrations, they argue. In a statement describing Steinemann's study as "flawed", the Fragrance Materials Association of the United States says the ingredients listed in her study also occur naturally in everyday items, such as cucumbers (ethanol), honey (ethyl acetate), pine forests (alpha-pinene) and citrus fruit (2-butanone).
Fragrances, being more obvious than other chemicals in the environment, are often unfairly blamed for hypersensitivity reactions, the manufacturers say – though they acknowledge that a percentage of people are hypersensitive to these chemicals, and these people should avoid exposure to them.
Better evidence needed
But establishing the link between these chemicals and human disease is fraught with difficulty, says Dr Liz Hanna, national convenor of the Environmental Health Special Interest Group from the Public Health Association of Australia.
To do that, ideally, you'd have to do an experimental study in which you gave people chemicals and then followed them up to see if they got ill. Obviously you can't do that, she says.
Also, we don't have a lot of existing data about the health of people who use these chemicals. Doctors don't routinely screen people for exposure to chemicals, and commercial pathology labs don't offer the tests anyway. So we don't have a lot of data over time to compare population exposure with illness patterns.
In any case, people can be exposed to a range of many different chemicals at low doses, over many years – it's hard to tell the effects of a particular chemical in isolation.
But some of the VOCs used in these products are known to be harmful to animals in lab experiments, and are strongly suspected of being harmful to humans.
The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit environmental organisation in the United States, did a study of personal care products called Skin Deep. It found that one in three contained at least one chemical classified as a possible carcinogen, and one in a hundred contained chemicals that are probable carcinogens. Some contained chemicals linked to birth defects.
This study also found that 90 per cent of the ingredients in personal care products have never been tested for safety in humans.
This might sound extraordinary, but you have to remember that some of these chemicals have been around for as long as 100 years, and it's only in the past decade or so that we've started seriously testing them for their effects on health, says Dr Hanna.
The attitude of regulating bodies, such as NICNAS in Australia (the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme) is that there are so many of these chemicals it wouldn't be feasible to test them all, so only chemicals new to the market need to be tested. An existing chemical is only tested if there's an adverse reaction to it among the population and that chemical is thought to be the cause.
What makes the situation more complicated is that nobody knows what's actually in many products, except the manufacturers. In Australia, just as in the US, manufacturers are only required to put 'fragrance' or 'perfume' on the label. They're exempted from listing the individual ingredients.
Historically, labelling legislation has protected manufacturers from having to list their ingredients for secrecy reasons, to prevent competitors from discovering their ingredients and copying them. But it has the effect of making it harder for consumers – and researchers and government regulators – to know what's in these products.
Even NICNAS agrees we need a lot more information about chemicals and their potential toxicity before we know for sure that these products are safe.
But in the past few years there been a explosion in research, mainly in epidemiological studies, particularly in the US and in Europe, into the harmful effects of these chemicals. We can expect to see tighter regulation of these products in the years ahead as more evidence becomes available, Dr Hanna believes. Reflecting this, there's a corresponding movement away from chemical fragrances among consumers and some sections of the cosmetics industry, she says.
We need these products to be labelled better, argues Dr Liz Hanna. The chemicals should be listed on the product packaging or in fact sheets available from the manufacturer.
For consumers, there are ways of simplifying the labelling with an accreditation system – if a product is non-toxic, it could get a 'green tick', for example.
Until we know more about these products, even if you don't suffer from a reaction to them, it might be a good idea to reduce your exposure to perfumes and fragrances. Choose scent-free products: unscented toilet paper, for example. Fresh flowers and herbs are good ways to naturally scent your home. Avoid air fresheners – get rid of the source of bad smalls and ventilate the home instead.
Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care products are chemical free and are not artificially scented. Can u blame government for people buying cigarette's. Its on the label. You will get cancer if you smoke! People keep buying cigarettes. I don't rely on government to completely take care of me. I am grateful I recieve my mail. We have to read. Yes, I said it. We have to read and use the internet for something other that the garbage we use it for. Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care Products.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbOXyUKtdqU

Organic Skin Care Products, Glam-Nations Organic Skin Care Regimen

Even though skin looks the same and even healthy with a quick glance, there are three different types of skin, each with its own characteristics and needs. Some people have skin with excess oil (sebum) on the skin while others will find their skin flakes and is easily irritated. Even if there is nothing wrong with your skin, you will still need to use the right skin care products to ensure that it stays that way. The most important step in achieving healthy and beautiful skin is following Glam-Nations organic skin care regimen consistently that addresses the particular needs of each skin type.
Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care For Oily Skin
Perhaps the most noticeable characteristic of oily skin is the slippery feeling and shiny look caused by excess sebum that returns a short time after it has been washed. This skin type can also be identified by the uneven texture of the skin and large pores that often become clogged and form acne. With this type of complexion, it is important to note that the oil on the surface of the skin has nothing to do with the amount of moisture in the skin. In fact, oily skin is often dry.The first step in Glam-Nations organic skin care regimen for oily skin is a foaming cleanser that will clean and unclog pores without stripping the tissue of its valuable moisture. To finish up, use Glam-Nation moisturizer that will moisturize without clogging pores. To maintain this healthy look throughout the day you can use Glam-Nation moisturizers that can be applied over makeup.

Glam-Nation Treatment for Dry Skin
Dry, flaky patches caused by a lack of nutrients and moisture is the most notable symptom of dry skin. This is often heightened by poor cell regeneration making the skin feel tight and even itchy. People with this skin type have very small pores, which rarely clog and cause breakouts. Just like oily skin, dry skin types need a mild cleanser that will not dehydrate the skin cells further. Instead of a foam cleanser, use Glam-Nations cream cleanser that will help to smooth out the skin cells and tame irritation. After the skin is clean, it is important to replace the nutrients and moisture that is missing from the skin's make up. Glam-Nation Hydrators will lift and firm the skin while supplying a high amount of antioxidants. This makes the skin look healthier, but it will also help to repair facial tissue while protecting from future damage.

Glam-Nation Regimens For Normal Skin
Glam-Nation organic skin care regimen for normal skin will help maintain the balance of the skin while providing nutrients and antioxidants that will keep the skin nourished and looking its best. Normal complexions will feel even and smooth with no dry or oily patches. This skin type might get the odd blemish, but the pores should not look larger than normal or clogged.Glam-Nations Gel-type cleansers are great for getting skin clean without harming its current balance. Glam-Nation organic moisturizers add moisture and valuable minerals that are important in the next step. This will help to protect skin regeneration and resilience. Finally, use Glam-Nation Hydrator that will increase the effectiveness of the other skin products while adding additional moisture and nutrients.
Keep in mind that all skin types can be sensitive to fragrances and other additives found in some non organic skin care products. Selecting Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care products will eliminate this since they do not contain unnatural, heavy fragrances and chemically engineered additives. Glam-Nation products will also be more effective because of their longer shelf life. For the best results, select Glam-Nation organic skin care products.

Organic Skin Care Products, Natural VS. Organic

According to government labeling requirements, "natural" means that an ingredient has not been significantly altered from its original state, nor has anything been removed from it (with the exception of water), nor have other substances been added to it.
Organic products are made with ingredients grown without any synthetic chemicals. Organic products typically do not contain synthetic ingredients because you cannot certify a synthetic as organic. Only products which are grown according to the organic standards and verified by an approved certifier may be called "Organic" or "Certified Organic". All "organic" products must be certified as such to be called "Organic." Glam-Nations Organic Skin Care Products are true “certified” organic products. We only use ingredients that are organic and or "wild crafted". The term "wild crafted" means that just the way that ingredient appears in nature is just the way it appears in the product. This is a very costly oil and scarcely available, but unlike other essential oils which have short shelf life, this oil can be stored for a long-long time.

In cosmetic manufacturing it is important to keep in mind that Helichrysum is a strong herbaceous smelling plant, and some people shy away from formulating with it, yet our clients have in the last decade never complained about the herbaceous smell that it adds to the formula.
The therapeutic properties are anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, as well as cytophylactic. The cytophylactic properties of this herb help to stimulate cellular regeneration and are therefore a boon for anti-aging skincare. Clinical tests could not confirm that it stimulates primary human fibroblast.

It has wonderful regenerating qualities and greatly helps with healing of scars, acne, dermatitis, stretch marks, boils and abscesses. The toning qualities are phenomenal and are used to perk up and bind loose hanging skin. It has a strong straw-like, fruity smell with a honey and tea undertone and the color can range from pale yellow to red. In folk medicine it is used for fighting the ravages of aging. The cytophylactic properties would underscore this use, since it encourages the growth and regeneration of new skin cells.

Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care uses helichrysum in many of its products.

Organic Skin Care Products, The Benefits of Calendula.

What is calendula?
Commonly known as "pot marigold," calendula is an exceptionally versatile herb native to the Mediterranean. Eat fruits and vegetables and drink purified water. This will improve the moisture of your skin, as well as improving your general health. Moisture is what you need to make your skin firm and elastic.
Don’t forget to exercise or your skin will sag. Working your cardiovascular system and building muscle tone is important but do not forget to also exercise your insides. Tie Chi and Yoga squeeze you intestines, liver, and gallbladder. Tie Chi and Yoga are great for this; they move your insides around and work your organs together. Your insides feed you skin and if your insides are not healthy your skin will not be healthy.
Especially important is your intestines. Don’t eat meat, meat slows your digestion and makes it harder for your body to flush out toxins. Never eat hydrogenated oils like margarine. Don’t smoke, it turns your skin yellow. Stay away from alcohol. Alcohol makes the liver work when it should not have to. This keeps it from doing the job of removing toxins. Toxins build up and sit in your fat, organs and your skin.
Get an ample amount of vitamin A. The body requires vitamin A every day to preserve healthy skin. Lack of vitamin B2 may result in oily skin and hair, and premature wrinkles. Nutritional yeast and wheat germ are good places to get vitamin B2 in your diet. Vitamin E and vitamin C have antioxidant properties; they help in preventing skin damage.
Herbs for Your Skin Drink herbal teas made from red clover, dandelion root, burdock, and echinacea to clean the blood. All these herbs are found in extracts at your health food store. You can also get these herbs by the ounce at most health food stores. Red clover is better fresh, it makes a good ice tea just by itself. Goldenseal is a great internal cleanser but it does not make a good tea, it is better to take it in a capsule form.
Alfalfa is an herb that you can take every day for a lifetime. Alfalfa is nutritious and a cleanser that removes toxins from the body Alfalfa provides beta-carotene and vitamins C, E, and K. Alfalfa roots grow deep, they pick up high concentrations of nutrients not always found in the surface soils. This can supply the trace minerals that are lacking in most diets. Alfalfa sprouts are in groceries and salad bars or you can sprout your own. You can find alfalfa leaves and seeds in capsules or tables as well as the bulk powdered herb in most health food stores. Be good to yourself. Use Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care Products. http://www.glam-nation.com/

Organic Skin Care Products, Chemmicals in Hair Dye. Can they cause cancer?

Never mind that permanent hair dyes with a high chemical composition may stress and dry out your hair. There is a lot more questions about what hair dyes can do besides causing damaged or destroyed hair follicles.
A large percentage of both American men and women use permanent hair dyes of some sort. Since the current population of Baby Boomers is aging, the number of people dying or coloring their hair in the US has been increasing steadily. The US Census Bureau estimated that over 22 million women alone would dye their hair by the year 2003.
It is estimated that one in eight men between the ages of 13 and 70 use some form of hair dyes to color their graying hair and beards. This number is increasing by the year.
Hair dyes and related products is very big business. Commercial dye-makers sell over $7 billion dollars worth of hair dyes worldwide every year.
So what else can hair dyes do to you? If you believe many of the scientific studies that have been done over the past 20 years, hair dyes may be carcinogenic. Why? Hair dyes are applied directly to the scalp, nearest the root. This is where the blood supply is the richest in the entire human body. It is also where the blood supply may carry any carcinogenic components right into the blood stream.
So can hair dyes cause cancer? It depends on whom you listen to and what you believe.
Many scientists and natural health care practioners believe that the chemicals in hair dyes, especially the dark colored permanent dyes, are easily absorbed into the body via the scalp. Once absorbed into the body they become concentrated in the bladder. Dark hair dyes are of particular concern because they contain a much higher concentration of chemicals than the lighter dyes.
There is some good news. Formaldehyde mixes easily with water but will not mix with oil or grease. It is common to find formaldehyde in aqueous cosmetic formulations such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, liquid hand wash and bubble bath, even products designed for children such as bubble bath and baby shampoo have formaldehyde in them! Would you knowingly put formaldehyde on your skin or allow your loved ones to if you knew the full facts? Formaldehyde Fact Sheet Health Effects of Formaldehyde Formaldehyde, a colourless, pungent-smelling gas, can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing in some humans exposed at elevated levels (above 0.1 parts per million). High concentrations of formaldehyde may trigger asthma attacks in susceptible people. There is evidence that some people can develop a sensitivity to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and is a known carcinogen (may cause cancer in humans). Health effects from exposure to formaldehyde include eye, nose, and throat irritation; wheezing and coughing; fatigue; skin rash; severe allergic reactions. May also cause other effects listed under "organic gases." EPA's Integrated Risk Information System profile - http://www.epa.gov/iris/subst/0419.htm

How Formaldehyde Affects Your Body: Fact Sheet Formaldehyde can affect you when you breathe its vapours and/or touch the liquid. Because formaldehyde reacts quickly with body tissues, it mainly affects sites of direct contact, such as the lungs and eyes and skin. The most common effect of mild overexposure is irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin, as described below.

Eyes, Nose, and Throat: The eyes, nose, and throat are irritated by formaldehyde vapours at levels as low as 1 part formaldehyde per million parts of air (1 part per million, or 1 "ppm" - see "Legal Exposure Limits"). Low-level exposure can cause teariness, redness, and burning of the eyes, sneezing and coughing, and sore throat. Liquid formaldehyde solutions contacting the eyes can damage the cornea, possibly causing blindness. Exposure to formaldehyde vapours produces varied effects; some people have irritant symptoms at very low levels, while others can tolerate higher levels with little or no reaction. Some common effects of formaldehyde vapours on the eyes, nose, and throat are described below:

Lungs: High levels (5-30 ppm and higher) can severely irritate the lungs, causing chest pain and shortness of breath. Repeated exposure to formaldehyde can cause asthma. Symptoms of asthma include chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing. Repeated exposure to formaldehyde and/or other respiratory irritants may also increase your chances of contracting pneumonia or bronchitis. Formaldehyde's long-term effects on the lungs are not fully understood but may cause permanent damage.

Skin: Formaldehyde solutions can destroy your skin's natural protective oils. Frequent or prolonged skin contact with formaldehyde solutions can cause dryness, flaking, cracking, and dermatitis (skin rash). Skin contact can also cause an allergic reaction (redness, itching, hives, and blisters). Studies show that as many as one in twenty workers who are regularly exposed to formaldehyde develop an allergic skin reaction.

Cancer: Formaldehyde causes cancer in test animals. Some studies have suggested that formaldehyde exposure can cause cancer of the lungs and respiratory tract in humans. The International Agency for Research on Cancer considers formaldehyde a probable human carcinogen. Formaldehyde is classed as a carcinogen under California's Prop 65.

Reproductive System: The effects of formaldehyde on the reproductive system have not been well studied. In limited studies, formaldehyde did not harm pregnancy in female animals or affect the reproductive function of male animals. We do not know whether formaldehyde can affect pregnancy or reproductive function in humans; however, exposures that do not cause other symptoms probably will not affect pregnancy or reproductive function. [/color]

Just what are the safe levels of these contaminants? The truth is, no one knows. Many of the ingredients commonly used in the cosmetics and toiletries we use every day are increasingly coming under suspicion. For example, the Food and Drug Administration in the USA are currently assessing the risks of DEA (diethanolamine) residues in cosmetics following a study that linked DEA to cancer in laboratory animals. Many people have had a bad experience with a cosmetic or toiletry that left them with red, itching skin or a bad hair day. Perhaps the informed consumer should demand that cosmetics and toiletries carry labels that say, "Analysis shows that this product contains no formaldehyde." And a host of other common contaminants should also be included in the analysis. If there is a risk, however slight, then these substances should be removed from our personal care products. The technology to do this exists so as informed consumers we should insist that it is used. Twenty years ago the words, "Free from artificial colours and flavours," was rare on food packaging. Now it is commonplace. Let's do the same for cosmetics. Glam-Nation Organic Skin Care products do not contain any of these harmul chemicals.

http://www.glam-nation.com

Organic Skin Care Products, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)

Did you know that this ingredient is in mostly all non-organic skin care products?

Sodium Lauryl sulphate (SLS) Used in toothpastes, shampoos and just about every personal cleansing product on the market. This toxic store soon leads to poisoning of systems and cause diseases like secondary hypertension.
In fact, according to World Health Organization (WHO), 82% of all chronic degenerative diseases are caused by environmental exposure to toxic metals. Up to 60% of what you put on your skin will absorb through the skin and into the bloodstream.

Too many of the toiletries and cosmetics we use are hazardous carcinogenic cocktails of synthetic chemicals. Most of the chemicals which go into our toiletries are no different from the harsh toxic chemicals used in industry."
Some of the most dangerous chemicals we put on our bodies in the name of beauty belong to a family of hormone-disrupting chemicals.

The ingredients found in Glam Nation organic skin care products are all picked by hand like the fine wines of the world. Glam Nation organic skin care products are hand crafted giving you the highest quality in Luxurious Organic Skin Care.

The following chemicals are common in your cosmetics and skin care products:

Propylene glycol (PG) is a wetting agent and solvent used in make up, hair care products, deodorants, after shave and is often found in toothpaste. Its also the main ingredient in antifreeze and brake fluid.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) A related agent found in most skin cleansers, is a caustic used to dissolve grease... the same substance you find in oven cleaners.
Isopropyl and Alcohol A poisonous solvent and denaturing (altering the structure of other chemicals). Found in hair colour rinses, body rubs, hand lotions, after shave lotions, fragrances, is also used as a solvent and found in wood finishing lacquers.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) Used in toothpastes, shampoos and just about every personal cleansing product on the market.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is a harsh detergent commonly used as an engine degreaser and garage floor cleaner.
Formaldehyde Used in bubble bath, shampoos, moisturizing lotions and many cosmetics as an inhibiting agent against carcinogenic nitrosamine production. Yet this chemical is a known carcinogen in it's own right! It is also used in vaccines as a preservative and given to our children for goodness sake!
Formaldehyde is a powerful and poisonous toxic substance! It readily penetrates the skin and can cause serious future health concerns and often sensitizes individuals to other chemicals. It is commonly used in agriculture as a foot rot treatment for sheep and cattle and as embalming fluid to preserve bodies.

Please read labels and only apply Glam Nation organic skin care products to your skin.
